Volunteer Job Descriptions

Registration: As the racers and volunteers arrive, they must sign in, get race packet, pay balance, and fill out several forms, medical information, waivers etc. This paper work is part of every race and does not last long. As the race starts, volunteers are usually reassigned as course marshals, timers, and aid station workers.

Course marshaling: Marshals are placed at transition areas, such as from canoe-to-bike transition, and at intersections to direct competitors.

Timers: Timers are positioned at transition areas and the finish line to record the progress of the racers as they complete each leg of the course. This provides the racers with a record of their times for the swim, bike and run as well as the transition times from one leg to another.

Other duties: Setting up the head quarters, transporting personnel and equipment around the course, clean-up and assisting specialty crews such as medical and water safety. Adventure race volunteers assist in gear check-in, managing checkpoints (CPs). CPs are the points to which the racers travel sequentially to complete the course. CP workers log in the competitors and sign the teams' passports to evidence their completion of the route. CP managers also communicate with race officials, often by two-way radio, to keep headquarters “connected” with what's happening on the course. (For those not comfortable in the woods, the activities at headquarters, primarily communicating with the CPs to track and record the competitors' progress, may be a less rigorous introduction to adventure racing. HQ workers have better access to the comforts of home. )

Challenge facilitator : Racers will be challenged thoughout the course and volunteers are needed to facilitate these in a safe and fair environment. These will be high pressure, exciting stations at times due to multiple teams coming in at the same time!
